Maesteg Festival - Gwyl Maesteg: 18th May - 15th June 2013

Maesteg Town Council's Events Committee has been busy over the last two months planning a series of late Spring events to celebrate our rich culture and heritage within the valley.  Spanning a four week period from Saturday 18th May until Saturday 15th June, venues across Maesteg - in particular Maesteg Town Hall - will play host to a range of festivities and events, including choir performances, historical exhibitions, an amateur dramatic performance and even a renowned children's entertainer!  

The full list of events taking place during the Maesteg Festival are as follows:-

Saturday 18/5

'A Feast of Music Band Day' - starting at 3pm at The Star Hotel, Maesteg.  Free entry.  Live bands, many of them local, will be doing ad-hoc performances with a range of music at this town centre venue.

Sunday 19/5 - Party in the Park

The annual event returns once again at Maesteg Welfare Park, organised by the Garnwen Trust.  This is a fanastic family day out and has something for everyone.  Adults £6; children aged 5 to 15 years £4.

Monday 20/5 - Friday 24/5 - Hospital Exhibition at Maesteg Town Hall

To commemorate the centenary of one of Maesteg's best-loved institution, the Town Hall is hosting an exhibition on Maesteg Community Hospital.  This will include exhibits of hospital rooms as they would have been 100 years ago, right to the very day.  A preview evening takes place on the Monday from 7pm; Tues to Thurs 10am to 4pm.  Free entry.

Saturday 25/5 - joint amateur dramatic production

Maesteg Amateur Operatic Society and the Dramatic Society are joining forces to give us a real treat on this Saturday evening at the Town Hall with a 'Grand Evening of Music and Plays'.  Adults £3; children £2 with curtain up at 7pm.

Tues 28/5 - Fri 31/5 - Llynfi Valley Industrial Heritage Exhibition at Maesteg Town Hall

Given that our valley was built on coal mines and many of our family members will have been employed in the pits, we will be celebrating Maesteg's rich coal mining heritage throughout this week with an historical look-back at the days gone by at Maesteg Town Hall.  10am to 4pm.  Free entry.

Sat 1/6 - Choral evening at Maesteg Town Hall

Many of the choirs in Maesteg have been working together to set up a day of choral performances throughout the evening with a feast of musical talent at the Town Hall.  Starts 6pm.  Adults £3; children £2.

Sun 2/6 - Maesteg Festival Family Fun Day

Fingers crossed for dry weather on this one, as Maesteg Welfare Park will be hosting a fun day for all the family on the very same day as the 60th anniversary of HM Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation.  Games will include old-time favourites such as the sack races as well as the egg and spoon race.  In addition, the Friends of Maesteg Welfare Park will be officially opening their new walkways and recently-built bridge in the park and have invited a beekeeper along to keep the kids amused.  The fun starts at 2pm.  Free entry.

Mon 3/6 and Tues 4/6 - Primary School Coronation Parties

All primary schools in the valley have been invited along to Maesteg Town Hall over the course of the two days to be entertained by JuggleStruk, a renowned children's entertainer, at Maesteg Town Hall.  Infant and junior sessions will be held separately.

Weds 5/6 - Fri 7/6 - Art Society Exhibition

Members of Maesteg's Art Society will host their annual exhibition of wonderful paintings at Maesteg Town Hall.  Special previews on the Wednesday evening; open to the public from Thursday 6/6, 10am to 4pm.

Sat 8/6 - Craft & Food Fayre

Again, Maesteg Town Hall will be hosting a whole delight of craft activites and a food fair with a Welsh flavour.  Open 10am to 3pm.  Free entry. 

Sat 8/6 - Gymanfa Ganu at Maesteg Town Hall

Starts at 6.30pm.  Programme £1.

Sun 9/6 - Maesteg Festival Open

Maesteg Golf Club are hosting an Open Tournament for anyone wishing to join in.  This is bookable in advance by contacting Gareth Law, PGA Professional on 01656 812003 by 2/6.

Tues 11/6 - Industrial Heritage Trail Walk

Meeting at Maesteg Sports Centre at 10.  Led by Roy Meredith.

Weds 12/6 - Senior Citizen Groups - Afternoon Tea & Concert

With entertainment provided courtesy of our primary schools' choir groups.

Fri 14/6 - Tag Rugby Event 

Years 3 and 4 of our local primary schools competing at Maesteg Welfare Park. 

Sat 15/6 - Grand Festival Finale - Maesteg Town Hall

Two events are being held to mark the close of this year's festival.  Maesteg's Got Talent will be taking place at the Town Hall from 3pm to 7.30pm followed by a closing half hour by Maesteg Gleemen Male Voice Choir.  Adults £3; children £2.

Amid all of these events, we are keeping our fingers crossed for the completion and official opening of the brand new Maesteg Market in Talbot Street.  Though we have no word as yet, progress is very good and we will keep you updated if a new event appears centered around the opening of the Market.
